LOL, putting a tax on SUVs and other inefficient cars is still "letting the government decide."

High gas prices are already driving record sales of hybrids. The marketplace is already demanding more efficient vehicles.

The only reason why we should tax vehicle sales instead of gas is because the latter would punish existing drivers. But it's a much more effective solution than simply taxing sales of new vehicles. Why leave people who drive old 1979 Lincoln Continentals alone? Because they're the people who can't afford a new car and thus shouldn't have to pay for more expensive gas?
