What has really made cancer a modern plague is that it is mostly a disease of old age. In previous eras, people usually died young or middle-aged of something else before they had a chance to worry about cancer.

the threat of cancer has exploded as technology produces complex chemicals and molecules not found in nature.

Actual cancer cases have dropped. Those "complex chemicals" you mention are responsible for the huge drop in stomach cancer due to less food spoilage.
