I think "stereotypes" are quite useful. I think that in the main they are mostly valid--which explains why they became stereotypes. And, yes, this includes ethnic stereotypes. Stereotypes are much like caricatures in the art world; they are created from the most prominent features and traits we observe in members of groups of any sort.

I have done a lot of traveling in my time, and I have found the prevailing stereotypes of various nationalities to be quite accurate in a macro sense, and thus quite useful to know beforehand.

Just because you hold a stereotype in your head, doesn't mean you can't immediately distinguish the ways individuals that you meet may NOT accord with it.
