Yes, I remember that now.

a lot of Mayans don't speak much Spanish so you have to bring in a Mayan who speaks both to translate it into Spanish, and another person to translate it from Spanish to English).

I have a Mayan/Spanish dictionary I picked up on my first trip to that part of the world. Never used it. It now sits with the rest of the dictionary collection.

children from the nation where my folks are from are raised to have a very high self-image (as is the case with a number of Latin American nations)and the idea of being pitied or being seen as a victim in any way, shape or form really runs counter to everything my parents sought to instill in me.

Ah, it would be lovely if that particular cultural element caught on in the States.
