There will always be people who take out their frustrations with the world in that way.

KKK:

"At its peak in the mid-1920s, the organization included about 15% of the nation's eligible population, approximately 4–5 million men.[2"

Interestingly, during the Great Depression Klan popularity fell dramatically- it is at times when people have to bond together in the face of adversity that such organizations lose appeal (should I say "loose" appeal :-)?) Socialism, and the assistance of the state, and the nation truly pulling together as a unit, is necessary in times of true crisis (as opposed to manufactured crises, which merely fracture the country- like the "drug war" or the "war on terror"). Fake wars which divide those who believe, from those who think the emperor has no clothes, are a problem right now- and I think these fake wars saddle erstwhile "warriors" with impotent anger. Once we face a real crisis, the peddlers of hate will find less traction, and the country will no doubt bond as it fights whatever real threat we may actually face. Then, of course, history will repeat itself, and we'll atomize again :-)
