In many ways we're lucky that Hispanics are our significant illegal minority. I teach and have taught many Hispanic children- some of them migrants- and they are respectful, hard working, and they come from in tact families. All of that bodes well, I think, for the future.

One of our biggest problems in teaching is reaching the parents of our students. We were just discussing this at our last teacher work day. Because of their status- illegal, sometimes- they have a reasonable fear of interacting with any quasi governmental bureaucracy- even it that bureaucracy is just a school. We're thinking of liaising with the Catholic churches in our area to try to put out information through them- since the church is a trusted institution.

We're running that by the district lawyers, to see what is permissible and what is not.
