"..we then proceeded to make a little strip of land the size of New Jersey our foreign policy priority for about the last 40 years. That's a pathology."

It made sense during the Cold War, to have Israel there to balance all the Soviet proxies in the region. Today though, it's just a really bad habit that goes against our national interest.

Its never good to force the birth of something when there are so many objections. Truman should go down as one of our worst presidents.

Nah, we've done much worse things than help establish Israel. The biggest problem with Israel vis-a-vis the U.S. is not that we worked for its establishment, it's that we then proceeded to make a little strip of land the size of New Jersey our foreign policy priority for about the last 40 years. That's a pathology.

True but it was Truman who overrode some good advice and insisted on Israel's creation. He also was the guy who authorized the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. And he was the same guy who came up with the fear engendering Truman Doctrine.....which help to scare the people and Congress into voting for the most militaristic budget in America's history. In fact, America's military top heavy budgets pretty much started with him.

Frankly, I think he's right up there with Bush.
