When you look at the fact that Syria is run by a 12% minority who have killed their countrymen with such savagery, it's hard to believe that they are still in power.

...with the son being such a wimp. As far as I can tell, the savagery was politically a big winner for Hafez al Assad, and the son is still reaping the fruit of it. Arabs respect that kind of ruthlessness. The outrage that would be sparked if someone tried it it Europe (think: Serbia) doesn't operate in the Arab world.

I think it's an effect of the honor/shame drivers of Arab culture. If you knuckle under to an overwhelming, savage adversary, it makes your shame less, because everybody knows you had absolutely no choice.
