Only a concrete bunker could withstand a direct hit. I wonder if these houses had basements. Water table looks pretty hight there.

One factor might be that a bent nail holds better than a straight one. Also, I use spiral nails for almost everything I build.

Of course it was. Popular Science gave a new nail that stops this it's 2006 innovator's award.
