Spirals are great and ring shanks are good too, but I haven't used shanks as much. I've used redwood and treated wood both over the years, but the treated wood today isn't the same stuff as 20 years ago. When I built a fence last year, I noticed the difference and discovered that new formulas are being used now for environmental reasons. My bet is that the new process has a shorter lifespan.
