History repeating itself.

1911A1 replacing the 38 long Colt. And we're still fighting the Armalite AR15 - M14 argument of 1960...

US uses bullets ill-suited for new ways of war

I have yet to meet a single SF soldier wanting to give up his 5.56 based M4 for anything based on the 7.62 round.

The key recent upgrade for us has been from 7.62 machine guns to more 50s on vehicles.
The reason being the 50 is far more effective against hard targets like vehicles and buildings. The increased range is another significant factor.

We provide 45s as replacements for 9mm pistols for the same reason.

But to be perfectly frank, all these weapons are lethal as hell in the right hands. A well aimed round fired from a US military weapon into the head or anywhere along the aortic axis is a killer.
