Hand off for TD-SCDMA is different (baton vs soft). I suspect the spread spectrum patents are applicable but they are coming to a close soon and I think rake receivers methods have been enhanced by smart antenae functionality.

With TD-SCDMA the uplink signals are synchronized like with cdma but I'd be surprised if it wasn't done in a much different manner than with cdma's use of GPS timing signals. I sure someone else around here could better eloquate the td-scdma vs wcdma/cdma differences ... if they so choose.
