The hospital my wife works at just had a big layoff because of a very real loss.

Non-profit is a big misnomer. Every organization has to make a profit or they die. The hospital I spoke of above has a goal of 3% of revenue. They consider that the minimum needed to reinvest in plant and equipment. They never come anywhere near that. They make their books open to the public if anyone cares to look.

Yes the word non-profit for a hospital is a joke. There are plenty of hugely profitable sections and people getting rich off of the hospital.
