I actually think he is pretty far right. I must admit - I am baffled by libertarians location on the political spectrum.

I think it is because you see the political spectrum as a one dimensional thing from left to right. In reality it is like a ball with everyone radiating out in different directions - three dimensional if you will. And there is lots of overlap.

It's two dimensional. On the east-west axis you have your standard left-right. But there is also a north-south libertarian-authoritarian axis. Most libertarians reside in the north-east quadrant, the libertarian right. The social conservatives, authoritarians who would have the government enforce their societal values, live in the south-east quadrant. Your libertarian right is into freedom and your authoritarian right is into maintaining traditions.

Bob Barr is way right. He just went from bottom right to, er, less bottom. Despite his flirtation with the Libertarian Party, I have yet to see the soul of a libertarian.
