Or, he could calculate how much the effect of solar radiation decreases at Mars orbital distance. The effect of radiation decreases with the square of the distance.

We see this effect on our own planet in the temp differences between the poles and the equator, just as a hint.

But, Steve would have to know some math, or, just have common sense.
