What you don't realize, and Churchill did, is that they were screwed anyway, big time. Hell, the US and Brits had FUNDED the rearming of Germany after WWI. Churchill knew what it was coming to; it wasn't a guessing game or even a crap shoot for him. He knew it was problematic well before the time you're referring to.

It isn't rolling the dice when you play out the only hand you have.

Pat is a genius on these subjects and I haven't read his new book yet -- but he is clearly mistaken about his interpretation of Bush's remarks last week. Use of the term "appeasement" was totally appropriate in the circumstances.
