XOM going off on a different business line is one option. Another option is to pay dividends and buy back stock. Capital will flow to the other firms more capable of developing new technologies.

There is no reason for XOM to get on the government tit like BP building wind farms. The money will flow there when there is money to be made, it does not have to be forced out of the hands of XOM shareholders by global warming fanatics.
