You need a good friend or relative who works at the hospital you are interested in. They know what is what and who is who.

Good doctors run together. If your internist is excellent, he will want to send you only to excellent specialists. An internist wants to see his patients post surgery looking good.

In addition your internist, talk to OR and recovery room nurses about your surgeon. They well tell you which surgeon has respect for the patients tissues and whose patients look good when they leave the OR. Pre and post-op care is another matter, but generally if a surgeon does well in the OR, he will also excel in his pre and post op care. An internist will better be able to directly judge a surgeon on his pre and post op care than on his surgical technique. That is where the nurse comes in, although an internist will know whose patients are coming back to his office in good shape and whose are not.

I would agree that all rating systems for doctors are a joke. Miami's best doctors listed in Miami Magazine could just be those doctors that go to expensive charity dances. Ignore the lists. Do some detective work-it's your body and life.

lyndy have to disagree. we also did extensive research when my son donated his kidney to his brother in law. if you are lazy you will get stuck, if you spend the time you will find out who is the most respected in the field. In my wife's situation since 1972 i have lived with references, questions, and sounding out various doctors, procedures etc.

in the end you need to take charge of your situation.
