Tom Friedman agrees and in todays NYTimes says govt should mandate gas never falls below $4 and if it does, govt takes the money. This he says is what will really guarantee energy independence. I am generally against such govt moves but in this case i would consider it.

I'd be opposed to government mandating it; just let market forces do it. Besides, at this point, a lot of effort is being directed at it, and that isn't going to reverse.
