I always wonder what would have happened if bush had followed powell rather than rummy regarding force levels needed. I was watching an Elliot Engel documentary on msnbc. He said the shiaa were chanting for al sadr on the day they took down the statue of saddam. And days later they were joining the militia to get the US out as quickly as possible. I wonder now if we ever had much of a chance but the good news is saddam is gone, the kurds are free, al quaeda has been checked and even an iran leaning iraq without violence is preferable to what existed before.

>Nevertheless, you are right. Most Americans, myself included, expected the war to be a lot shorter and a lot less costly than it turned out to be.

Because the President and his people said so. Some of us, who don't believe the President, didn't think so.

Nevertheless, you are right. Most Americans, myself included, expected the war to be a lot shorter and a lot less costly than it turned out to be.

And one reason why you thought that is because that's the way the WH sold it to the American public. For an example, Rumsfeld said the war may last "six days, six weeks but no longer than six months". People though it would be like the Gulf War.
