McClellan has more axes to grind than the California fire brigade. He is son to Carol Keaton McClellan Rylander Strayhorn (and maybe a few husbands I forgot). She pimped him out to Bush Jr. to advance her own career. He probably thought they liked him, but the Rove team had him marked as patsy back in Texas and when his mom wasn't able to bring in support and money they treated him like a kleenex at teenage slumber party.
