Sharp edges into China with Sino-specific handset next month

Shanghai. May 29. INTERFAX-CHINA - Japanese electronics manufacturer Sharp will launch the SH9010c, its first mobile phone targeted towards the Chinese market, in late June, an official from Sharp China said today.

"The SH9010c is similar to the Sharp 920SH Aquos widescreen phone on the Japanese market. It has a 3.2-Megapixel camera just like the 920SH. We have removed the 3G and the One-Seg digital mobile TV functionalities from the 920SH to create the model for the Chinese market because those functions are not supported in China," Tao Yemeng, a marketing official from Sharp China, told Interfax.

The 920SH utilizes the WCDMA 3G standard, which is not yet in commercial use in China. The only 3G standard in use in China is the homegrown TD-SCDMA, with trial services launched in April by China Mobile.

The SH9010c model supports EDGE (Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution), a 2.75G mobile communication technology, and has some China-specific functions, such as support for MP3 ringtones, Tao said. This function is not usually supported by mobiles in Japan due to copyright concerns.

Sharp announced its plan to sell its mobile phones in China in March, after many Japanese mobile phone manufacturers such as Panasonic, NEC and Kyocera had pulled out of China's handset sector.

"Sharp had been preparing to enter the Chinese mobile phone market for a long time. We are the largest mobile phone manufacturer in Japan with approximately a 30 percent market share. We believe that the huge Chinese market provides great opportunities for Sharp," Tao said.

Tao said that developing special versions of mobile phones for the Chinese market increases R & D costs, but the company expects to be able to sell 3G mobile phones in China after the government issues 3G licenses.
