The curious dynamic to me is that the folks who still back these views adamantly are out there loudly screaming "radical left" at anyone who disagrees. But that approach lost Congress in 2006. It lost three red state congressional elections since. And there is no indication that the US electorate is actually a bunch of dittoheads who crave orthodox conservatism in the party platforms this fall. Unless you think that more than 50% of America is now "radical left" it makes no sense. Quite a disconnect between the rhetoric, belief and political reality.
