Looking out to the broader electorate, the issue polls I have seen have a Democratic advantage on just about every one. Within the Republican base, it's harder to figure out. I don't recall hearing a lot of voices for moderation but I don't read the journals where those issues might have been debated or thrashed out.

Looking back at the history of the Republican race, Thompson and Giuliani just didn't connect with voters, and Romney and Huckabee weren't incredibly strong rivals; they were certainly less known among Republican voters than McCain.

Looks like McCain kinda sorta edged and stumbled and backed his way into the nomination, without ever sorting out these ideological bumps that are tripping him up now.
