So test the legalization idea by doing it in an isolated state like HA for 5 years. If its a social disaster, it will be contained. If its a success, we can emulate it.

I really tried not to comment, but here we are again at the beginning of the "Never Ending Story".

People abuse food. (fat people)
People abuse sex. (sex addicts)
People abuse work. (workaholics)
People abuse power. (child/spouse abuse, Congress)
People abuse money.
People abuse drugs.

Draw your own conclusions as to where the focus might be most useful.

And just as an aside, if you use a bowl of ice cream to make yourself feel better, or go buy a new pair of shoes when you're feeling blue, you are exhibiting the same problem. And then the conversation devolves into the 'yeah but, it's not illegal (circular) or it's not harmful (nonsense).

Edit: I posted this to you by mistake. I intended to just post it, to nobody in particular.

Murderers in prison will average spending 12.8 years there, but the expected punishment for someone who commits a murder is 9.2 years.

I don't have much sympathy for people dealing drugs, but imagine how much time rapists and pedophiles spend compared to above. It's sad if we can't keep the truly harmful people in jail. Yes, drug dealers are harmful, but even the middlemen and runts in the chain are doing more time than MURDERERS with the mandatory sentencing laws. I would keep the murderer in jail longer than the guy transporting drugs.

You would not believe how many "normal" people are doing cocaine these days. Where the hell are they getting it? Last person I saw coked up was a middle school gym teacher.
