Jun. 4, 2008 (China Knowledge) - China, the biggest consumer of nonferrous
metals in the world, imported 13,442 tons of zinc in April, down 32%
year-on-year.

133,957 tons of zinc ore sands and concentrate were imported by the nation, down
20% from a year earlier. The total zinc import from January to April was 34,870
tons, indicating a year-on-year decline of 26%, according to statistics.

According to the statistics presented by International Lead and Zinc Study Group
(ILZSG), global zinc oversupply hit 72,000 tons in the first quarter of 2008.
Zinc consumption in the world decreased to 2.77 million tons from 2.78 million
in the same period last year, while zinc production stayed almost flat from a
year ago at 2.84 million tons.

The oversupply of zinc and other nonferrous metals was initially considered as
the major reason behind the declining prices on the global market, but according
to the latest statistics, demand decline is mainly responsible for the price
fall. Meanwhile the mounting inflationary pressure on global industries may also
lead to this situation.
