We're always in trouble somehow. Life is a series of problems- but problems beat the alternative :-) Somehow I think we'll rise above the crisis of the flag pin, and we'll find other things to worry about- or they will find us.

One of the reasons many people fixate on little things is because our problems, at the moment, are not the kinds of problems amenable to quick solutions. We have large intractable problems that need dealing with, and it's hard to get a handle on those- pollution is huge; climate change is huge; destruction of the world's food webs is huge. These are problems that we can't solve by declaring war and kicking some ass. We'll actually have to work with the world to either solve, or deal, with these problems. That means no unilateral answer.

It's just so much easier to fixate on flag pins.

Bush has done everything right. He plays up patriotism to a hilt. Panders to the conservative right. He plays the role of what every American expects a president to be...

However, flip the coin. He has been deceitful by propagandizing the need to invade Iraq. He allegedly exposed one of our CIA agents and then stood before the cameras claiming that the person who did expose her will be dealt with severely.

Is this not hypocritical. Personally I would rather have someone tell me the truth and not salute me because it's called for to put on a show.
