If McCain were a true maverick on all issues and got the nomination in defiance of the Bush base and its positions, I would have a serious debate with myself about which way to vote. I'd love to have moderate Republicans to vote for again.

But the parties have imposed a pretty strong orthodoxy on their nominees to toe the line with the activist base. When that happens, each of us has to decide where we line up on the key issues and follow our conscience.

I hope that some years down the line, we could have a lively debate over two candidates who aren't miles apart on the issues.
