Cocaine is apparently enjoying a resurgence, because the street price has fallen and it is more pure; therefore it has more of a kick.

This tells you that there is more coke available now than there ever was. In spite of our spending of billions and jailing hundreds of thousands. So what we have been doing has failed. And we have no reason to believe that "more of the same" will change things.

What changed our use of booze and cigarettes? Education and shame. As you mention, the educated cut down their use of it.

I agree with you, stillholding. Unfortunately, we've seen some of the problems attendant to the opiates because one of our close family has had problems with the stuff for years....luckily, has only hurt himself, and not others, but we know more than I ever thought possible because of this.

People just have no idea how many problems are directly related to heavy drugs. If people knew how much it is costing society right now for all the damage that is being done, they would want to actually shoot each and every dealer on sight.

All these things happened while it is illegal. Price goes down and quality goes up as more comes into the country. What you going to do about it?

The idea that it being illegal is a barrier to use is foolish make yourself feel good wishful thinking. I know that if it were legal, KLP would go out and buy an eight ball tomorrow, maybe you too. Thank god it's illegal. And the children, what about the children? Oh the humanity.

And all this nonsense about crack. Crack is cocaine with the salt removed (hydrocloride), so that it doesn't dissolve in water. Any fool can make crack from powder with a test tube, baking soda and a stove. Takes about 5 minutes. You get a lot more bang for the buck from injecting the powder. And you make a bigger mess being hit by a freight train than by a bicycle. So what.

Unfortunately the drug issue seems to be a convenient outlet for all sorts of emotional dissatisfaction with the world in general. Kind of like that BA who could do something about my crew following the strictest rules, but could do nothing about the non-union crew. Life's a mess but at least we can control drugs.

Except.
You.
Can't.

Honestly, ask yourself how is that working out?

Don't go off into some speculative future disaster land.

The experiment has already been done. It was done with alcohol. But of course that doesn't count. Why not?
Alcohol is an addictive drug, destructive in all the ways other drugs are.

You can get addicted to anything if you set your mind to it. I'm addicted to exercise currently. I tried coke in high school and found it was lame. My brain was overactive as it was. No thanks. Some people did not have the same reaction. Some were addicts for a bit and some for life.

Cocaine is deadly, because it is so addicting. You can make the argument that pot should be legalized, but not any of the opiates. If they're ever legalized, society will crash and burn.

The people that want coke or heroin or oxy are getting it right as we type. I think it costs about 30K a year to keep someone in prison. That money would be better spent on treatment.

I don't have sympathy for addicts who harm others in the course of their addiction. Put them in the can.

Not very good for the heart either. See, e.g. Len Bias.
