The beauty of our system is that a president can't quash dissent for long if at all, can't stay in power forever, and will always be shown in the end to be just another person holding the office temporarily, not a Supreme Executive above the law and other branches of government.

Bush came closer to the ugly edge of that equation than anyone since Nixon; now it's time for the pendulum to swing back where it belongs, with the true balance of powers.

Bush and his crowd can spend the next 20 years telling themselves how history will vindicate them one day. Nixon managed to rehab his image up to a point - but never to the point I'm sure he wanted and expected.
