I see you all saying much the same in defense of Obama.

Nope, not me. The government is a bit player in this, IMO. The law states that no federal agency is responsible for its implementation. It's nothing more than a touchstone, not something enforceable. If Obama is defying anything, and I'm not suggesting that he is, it's not authority but the cultural norms of a population subset.

I'm saying that we shouldn't make too much of minor cultural differences, judging people negatively for not conforming to local or individual expectations of proper ancillary behavior. Reminds me of the scolds looking down on those who would wear white shoes before Memorial Day or after Labor Day. Not that respect for the flag is of no more importance than the color of one's shoes, only that you can't judge the inherent worth of a person from his shoe color. Or his lapel pin. If that sounds too flip, then substitute judging the non-church-affiliated to be immoral.
