His stopping smoking was a condition laid down by his wife MIchelle for running for President. Giving up an addiction for another person seldom works. Even if it does it usually ends up with the person substituting some other addiction, so the 'working' is problematic. While every couple works out their dynamic to suit themselves, and who am I to judge, generally this sort of dealing (you can have this if you do that) isn't a sign of a healthy marriage.
