OK word smiths - what wording would make you focus on the issue instead of meaningless distractions? Why is addressing the issue so difficult?

Seems to me you're talking downsizing, not disarmament. The word, "disarm," is getting in the way.

So it seems to me that the discussion should be about "right-sizing" to meet our needs, what would be right-sizing in this context.

>>"Israel, by the way, has fewer planes, ships, and soldiers than we have, yet even though they are surrounded by enemies who have sworn to destroy them, they continue to exist."

Saying that Israel has fewer planes etc is irrelevant to the argument of what the US should have.

The US will significantly reduce its military out of economic necessity. Call it what you like.<<

Bob -

The point of mentioning Israel is that they get a lot done with a lot less hardware than we have. A smaller military is not necessarily a much less effective military.

And finally, you have stopped calling reducing the size of the military disarming. Thank you.

In any case, it remains to be seen what programs will end up being enacted by Congress. If they reduce some of the waste, and especially if they start insisting that the military do better accounting, we could be just as strong while spending less.
