The end result was an isolated presidency unable to reach anyone outside Bush's immediate base.

That's a problem, but it's an entirely different problem from the suppression of free speech, which was the topic.

Let's have a president who will stand up and debate different POVs again.

That would be good.

To that end, it also helps to have a reliably civil opposition. We need mutual disarmament to get there.
