Romney is much more conservative than the public perception of him. Without checking his record there is the temptation to characterize him as a Massachusetts politician and although he has been guilty of verbally pandering to his constituents, when he has pen in hand to sign or veto legislation, his opinions come through clearly. If Romney had represented a more conservative state, he could have expressed his political views more freely and while it is easy to criticize him for inconsistences, it is unreasonable to expect he should have committed political suicide by being more forthright.
