I grew up as the Grandson of two sets of Grandparents who had to flee difference parts of Europe because of religious and cultural hatred in Europe. On a few occasions, I heard my Father say that I should never turn my back on a Gentile, as they will spew hatred when the chips are down. I don't believe that from my actual experience but I have had to 're-train' a few of my in-laws in my mixed religious marriage. So I have some understanding of what it might be like for Blacks in America. Also, between my undergraduate degree and graduate school, I worked for the L.A. Department of Public Social Services and was a case worker for 60 Aid to Dependent Children in Watts. This added to my perspective greatly, enhancing my blue collar and 'rainbow' pre-college, school and neighborhood experience. In the early 60's, I hitch-hiked around the country and in the South was startled to see "White Only" drinking fountains, etc..
During my case work job in Watts, my supervisor, a very savvy African American (Black) invited me to attend her church to get a 'real' experience of people in her culture. It was an amazing experience.
I am also an irreligious person, fascinated by what all religions have created. I sometimes watch the Rev. T.D. Jakes from the Potter House on TV as I enjoy his incredibly enthusiastic delivery and encouragement of all to live independent and loving lives. His is not an all black church and he has not let fame go to his head. The Rabbi at the synagogue where we had our son study for his Bar Mitzvah is another such ecumenically wise man whose sermons are works of art as well as sending religious messages. It is interesting that I am reluctant to post the name of the Rabbi or his synagogue. Probably an archaic fear of antisemitism, even in these 'modern' times. How silly of me to fear this or to think that Hillary's comment about an Obama assassination could really happen in an 'enlightened' America.
