Some of my dearest friends and relatives disagree with my views, and I get along with them very well because we agree to disagree. We avoid talking politics because we value our relationship more than we do our prejudices.

My Dad was born and raised in the south but did not impart any racial hatred to me. My best friend in grade school was a black kid, and the two of us were the only scouts from our trip to go on the campouts. He forgave me for stepping in his frying pan accidentally during the flapjack flipping contest.

My Mom sang in Minstrel Shows in which some of the other acts were played in blackface. I thought at the time that the blackface acts honored the black race, but learned later that it was not received that way. Mom invited kids from the Job Corps Center to our house for Christmas. The kids that came were black, and that was fine with us. We did our best to make them comfortable.

Some time ago I was asked to take under my wing a black co-op ed student who had failed in several other venues. She stayed with me, became productive, and was accepted by my team. She planned to come back the following summer, but finally realized that forestry was not for her. She wanted to be a chemist, and that's what she did.

My next door neighbor was Jewish. One of my staff was Jewish. They were fine people.

I don't know any communists. I guess that's a non-issue, since communism does not seem to work and is on the decline.

I'm comfortable with Obama's melting pot attributes, but his need to disavow so many supporters is troubling.
