African Copper plans to start production at its Mowana mine in Botswana in July and achieve 25 000 t a year after 2012, the company's CEO said on Friday.

Joseph Hamilton said up to 5 500 t of copper contained in concentrate will be produced in 2008 and output will rise to 12 000 t in 2009.

"We expect to start (preliminary) production in July/August and then it will take three to four weeks to achieve commercial production," he told Reuters on the sidelines of an African mining conference in London.

Hamilton said that output will reach 28 000 t in 2012 before declining to stabilise at 25 000 t for the rest of the mine's life of 20-years.

"The project is looking fantastic and I'm very excited about it," he said.

Hamilton said that African Copper plans further exploration at Mowana, where it has spent $125-million to develop the mine and build a concentrator.

"There is potential for the expansion of the copper resource, especially since high copper prices have held," Hamilton said.

South Africa's Moolman Mining Ltd has been contracted to mine copper for Africa Copper at Mowana, where 330 people are employed.

U.K.-based Africa Copper is 60% owned by British investors, 25 percent by North American investors and the balance by investors in Botswana.
