Hard to ignore someone who has made it to a mid- or upper-level job and is shooting for one of the top-level brass rings.

When I first went to Washington, one of the old hands there preached to me the mantra, "Never apologize and never explain." He thought it made you look weak.

I never forgot that advice. I never took it either, so my time in government service wasn't filled with butting heads with everybody in sight. Some folks I knew who did that made it to the top, but more who didn't came out ahead.

In the political ranks, some fallen stars like Gingrich and Delay come to mind, probably Bob Wright and Al D'Amato too. I'm sure I have forgotten several more from both parties. Loudmouths who flamed out due to their own ego and hubris.
