Do you see the recent turmoil in Lebanon and Hezbollah's victory as indicative of a vastly changed landscape? Looks like the same old landscape from the last few decades. From time to time we succumb to the delusion that the ME is a giant Lego game where we can tear it down and rebuild it according to our own instructions. The history of the ME and South Asia suggests otherwise, for the most part. The British legacy in India is one of the few success stories I can think of. There are many failures to stack up next to it.
