When you pay for schools with a property tax you don't call it a tax on the real estate business.

Well it kind of is.


In the same way that an oil excise tax "kind of is" a tax on oil companies. But the reality is that the RE tax is a tax on homeowners and the oil excise tax is a tax on driving consumers.

But the "kind of" thing allows libertarian think tanks to be misleading and imply that oil company taxes are much, much higher than they actually are.
