Redistricting doesn't matter in presidential elections because the raw vote total for each state determines who gets all the electoral votes. There is no proportional allocation by district like the Dems use in their primary system.

The swing voters became more important when it became obvious that neither party can grow its base into a "permanent majority" like Rove dreamed about. Each side starts with around 30% each but the 40% in the middle is the crucial decisionmaking bloc.

I am optimistic about Obama's chances because he is running well ahead of McCain in that bloc right now. If he maintains that advantage and does it in the right states, his chances are very good.
