In the 60's we fought hard against living a shallow life. That was the thesis of Thomas mann (Tonio Kroger) and Herman Hesse (Siddhartha and Steppenwolf). We failed miserably it looks like-lol. Self actualization, being kind and generosity being much more important.

"Not" keeping up with the Jones was always our counter culture mantra. As I grew old I saw many people sell out who knew better and that always bothered me.

True story: recently I passed a monetary milestone and my company wanted me to accept these awards. I had kept not responding to requests for information they needed to give me the award and I finally got a lot of pressure to do so clear from the top.

I told the people who tried to pressure me to accept the award that Siddhartha/buddha, would never approve. I told them these wise men were not hacks, or were just sort of quaint oddities, they had something important to say and I have tried to live my life accordingly. I am sure they are still puzzling over my rejection of their honors-lol.

I live simply and usually do not pay much attention to money, as I feel my ignorance is much more imortant to address. I have many people (whom I know do not read or inquire about things)tell me the trouble they have getting their kids to work hard in school and read. I gently tell them it has to be part of the home culture.

If I am doing well, I spread it around.

But I am watching my spending now for the first time in many years. I see and feel real fear starting to spread.
