Tokyo stocks open sharply lower on U.S. stock plunge, stronger yen+

Jun 2 08:38 PM US/Eastern

TOKYO, June 3 (AP) - (Kyodo)—Tokyo stocks opened sharply lower Tuesday, weighed down by an overnight plunge in U.S. stocks, a stronger yen and the chance to sell for gains after the Tokyo stock market's three-day rise.
In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average lost 198.91 points, or 1.38 percent, from Monday to 14,241.23. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was down 15.66 points, or 1.10 percent, to 1,409.44. The Second Section lost ground.

Trading on the Tokyo market started with sharp losses, tracking the plunge in New York stocks Monday due to fears that the chaos in the world financial sector will be prolonged.

The U.S. dollar's depreciation relative to the yen from the 105 yen level Monday to the 104 yen level Tuesday morning also dragged down Tokyo stocks.

Declines were led by real estate, sea transport and pulp and paper issues. Major gainers included mining issues.
