you cant maintain a war, even one thats going well without popular support. What we have coming is mccains four year end of war in first term vs obama in 16 months. They are likely to be months apart by november. How about 32 months and out.

While he says straight out that America invaded the wrong country and doesn't know how one recovers from that

But is that really his call to make? That's really my problem with so many journalists -- that is, they are more or less like Hollywood celebrities -- rather than reporting the facts, they comment on them. If he doesn't want to be a journalist anymore, that's fine.

The only journalist I know I've known for about 6 or so years; he writes for a major newspaper. I honestly don't know where he stands politically. No idea. Right down the middle. And that's as it should be.

he also says that things are getting better in Iraq and that our soldiers have made a difference. Unfortunately these days, the American public seems to be all too weary of the war, and he's noticed that people aren't asking him about his experiences in Iraq anymore.

This is, fundamentally, the "fixed withdrawal date" scenario with a twist. The enemy knows that they need only outlast the American Left before the antiwar pressure will force a surrender. They know this. So, while they don't have a fixed withdrawal date, they know that by creating a protracted situation they are guaranteed a win. Bush is trying to avoid giving them this win, Obama will hand it to them, and McCain will defeat them. The enemy knows this.

When did Iraqi welfare become our national cause, when our OWN country is going down the tubes?

I'd like to ask him, in his judgment, how long would the 160K soldiers have to stay until the flames of 14 centuries of suni and shia hatred is quiesced sufficiently to leave a "secure" iraq? IOW, when does this end for the US?
