David, > But is that really his call to make?

They discussed this on the Today show, and although he knows it might cross a journalistic line, he feels it's at the point where it's just the plain truth. I respect his prerogative to make that call. Journalists are almost NEVER completely objective, and we shouldn't pretend that they ought to be.

Yet this journalist has a unique perspective given his choice to be right there on the front line. (According to Wiki, that has cost him his marriage among other things.) I have no reason to believe that he is trying to be dishonest.

I think they already got their wish. People just don't give a damn anymore. 9/11 is but a distant memory, and people just want to move on. No one cares about the difference between a Sunni, a Shiite, or a goat anymore. It was a lot simpler when it was just us vs. the terrorists, even with unfortunate civilians caught in the crossfire.

Maybe we'll see some smart thinking from Obama, but I doubt it unless something terrible happens during his administration. Something worse than the price of gas hitting $8/gallon. Something worse than us having to give up our SUVs and paying $20 every time we want to drive into a metropolitan area.
