Maurice's view of Man's place is a little different than yours - more heroic and, naturally poetic.

Yes, one could call it the Semi-Intelligent Gaian Hypothesis I guess. Gaia has regulated the biosphere not quite well enough (atmospheric CO2 slowly decaying), but eventually evolved intelligence sufficiently smart to start correcting that but not smart enough to actually know that they were doing so (assuming as the AGW bashers claim, that there is no scientific consensus on the matter!).

We are on the brink of the Intelligent Gaian Hypothesis: Life evolved that is smart enough to intentionally regulate the biosphere for life. The original Gaian Hypothesis simply claimed that the entire system (of which surely humans are a part) had evolved to regulate the biosphere. So I guess the Hypothesis is correct after all, and the AGW bashers are actually Gaians, just slightly more primitive ones.
