I said we have a hard time finding it, your statement the extreme version of that.

There is a huge divide that separates us.

Yup there is, but this assumes a common basis, the very thing you're arguing against.

It will take a market event to break the barriers to compromise.

Crisis, opportunity, you know the drill.

If you're talking about the great carbon debate, I don't see all that much difference among the positions. I see people choosing to accentuate the differences. You have to want to come together to come together.

I've done a lot of work with consensus building in facilitated (by me) groups. The first thing the facilitator asks the group is whether they're willing to work together towards one. Of course their boss is either sitting there or getting reports so everyone agrees. But were the group to decline, you pick up your flip charts and markers and leave. Ain't nothin' gonna happen but yapping past each other.
