That's the problem to begin with then. We agree.

The common basis used to be objective and disciplined. Those factors were respected. You define objectives and constraints, come up with alternative approaches, identify likelihood of success, costs, benefits, preferably quantified, and then you pick based on what best meets the objectives.

Yes, but how can we expect ethical behaviour to be mechanical if we're not consciously choosing to be there to begin with.

But we're neither trained for nor predisposed toward rigor. The closest we get to rigor anymore is the magic eight ball.
