I recalled that number from some previous research I had done, there is a really nice chart of nuclear weapons over time, year by year, and who had them. All I could find in the time I've had available now was this:

Which shows that at the height ot the cold war there were tens of thousands more warheads than there are now. A major human success story that should be continued even more seriously.
